A Philippine Valentine
by Jasmine Sison February 2005
It's the time of the year again when make their best attempt at
romance while women wait excitedly for this annual spectacle!
As with the rest of the world, prices of roses skyrocket in the Philippines as
the month of hearts draws near. Many restaurants come up with
valentine-dinner packages with exceedingly high prices. For the privileged
lovers, there is always the 5-star hotel dinner-concert shows. Many
concerts feature international music talents of yesteryears who always seem to
find their way to our third world shores. Perhaps, many nostalgic senior
citizens with retirement funds to spare make their Philippine visit financially rewarding.
Do you know the Lettermen is in town now? Anyway, I'm wandering off.
What about the rest of us who have to deal with the rising fuel prices and the
EVAT mess? Well, there's always a fast food around the corner. And
when times are hard, even a Jollibee Chicken Joy with you special one may truly
be a special Valentine treat!
There are other creative and practical ways of celebrating Valentines. For
myself, I prefer a tranquil place, far from the chaotic city night on Valentines
Day. The cool Tagaytay ridge is an example. Many restaurants with a
great view of the Taal volacano have thankfully set up shop there recently.
To the practical who would not like to pay the valentine premium, brave the
traffic or take a precious-consuming drive out of town, there's always the day
before or the day after! To the non-conformists Valentine corny, there are
364 other days of the year to give their respective mates romantic moments to
savor.
However one spends Valentines, it pays to remember what the Little Prince once
said, "what is essential is invisible to the eye."
Happy Valentines Day!
