The Big Bang of Boga
by Dulce Amor Niño January 2007
Wow, it’s a brand new year, and what best thing
to do?… but to welcome 2007 with a bang!
It
has been a tradition to celebrate the New Year with firecrackers. True enough,
these create noise which is, then, believed to take bad spirits or negative
vibes away. Along side with this, local government has also been persistent with its
Oplan Iwas Paputok. This advocacy ensures that designated zones will be secured
by police officers in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection,
Department of Health and local government units. It now makes sense that there
is no need for our safety to be compromised, just to experience the fun on this
big day. After all, we can make noise without the chance of danger that may
result to accidents, loss of lives or limbs.
As
an alternative, the so-called “boga” or PVC (Polyvenylchloride)
cannon was invented. This originated in Kawit, Cavite but its popularity had
reached Metro Manila and nearby provinces. With the following materials - PVC pipes, screw cap, toy
gun, stove lighter, spray paint, glue gun, electric wires, shoulder strap and
kerosene or denatured alcohol plus spray bottle for charging, expect that this
packs a bang as loud as any commercial firecrackers others can buy around.
Still, the proper use of boga is highly encouraged, and we must also be aware of the threat it can give. Most importantly, it should neither be
directed toward a person nor an animal.

Quite
admirably, Filipinos never had enough of creative ideas and resourcefulness. The
celebration is not to measure how luxurious it can be, but the significance is
what matters. The thrill is made present even through simple ways, with things
big or small.
May
we all have a blessed and bountiful year ahead of us!
