Pasukan and Rainy Day Blues
by Dulce Amor Niño
June 2006

Goodbye Summer! Hello Rainy Days! It’s the start of another school year. Unfortunately, typhoons and occasional floods are just among the challenges students face every year. It’s not all bad, though.

I’ll never forget my experience when I was in third year college at UST. There was a strong downpour and I got stranded in school. Water had risen up to waist level along España St. in Manila. Luckily, I bumped into a classmate who also looked apprehensive due to our common predicament. By the time water reached the building grounds, we decided to go inside one of the university buildings to wait for the water to subside.

It had gone late and the heavy shower hadn’t stopped. There was no other way except to spend the night over with other students. We just laid down on some newspapers and slept on the floor like refugees! The next morning, the administration was gracious enough to give us soup and crackers for breakfast. Shortly after, I was on my way home, happy to have survived the wet and memorable night.

I’m now working full-time, and attending graduate school part-time. Surely, I will keep looking back to those not-so-ordinary school days with great amusement! So there, School shouldn’t be a drag. After all, academics is just part of one’s education. It’s really all about having fun as we learn new things, build one’s capabilities and talents, and develop wisdom… rain or shine!

Cheers to all students and to the upcoming graduates of Batch 2007!
