Thinking of Him
by Dulce Amor Niņo May 2006
Father's Day is a celebration of the years he gave of himself to provide for our needs,
and nurture our talents, intellect and values.
The most vivid memories I have about my Dad are during my childhood days.
He used to take us to places for a trip, treat us out for a luscious meal, give us pasalubong upon arriving from work,
fetch us from school, drive to Church for a Sunday mass, bring us to the doctor when we are sick, do the repairs at home, cook his favorite "Sinigang na Hito",
and a lot more.
Through these, I
have believed that actions really do speak louder than words. My Dad is not
too vocal about his feelings, perhaps because he thought our Mom would find
it much easier to deal with their four daughters. Yes, he is the only guy in
our family, and wished he had a junior. I was even fondly teased to be his son
because I look like him, and as a child, I would pout and resist people's ridicule.
But gone are the young days, and now we're all grown-ups. Papa has retired after a 25-year service to
a private company, has gained more age, and has shown those white hairs. One thing remains, he still has the five women of his life staying altogether in one happy home, and I bet he is pleased to see how the family has turned
out to be, from then to now. We no longer expect him to bring ice cream or siopao
as he comes home, but we are even delighted with more stuff after he gets back
from a tour to the US or Canada. He would usually enjoy his time by watching movies
through his portable DVD player. He still cooks, and we're glad he prepares other
dishes aside from Sinigang.
A lot of things changed as the years
passed by, but I must say everything stayed in sheer bliss as it has always been. These memories
will linger in my heart and will be rekindled forever. I know my Dad will always be there,
despite the moments he chose not to be outspoken about his emotions. If not for all his time
and energies for the family, we would not have lived this way. He made our lives complete!
Today, let our fathers know they are
remembered. I'm sure they're the best in their own special way. They deserve our warm thoughts
and heartfelt prayers now and for always. It only takes a few words, so no matter where we are,
let us not miss to celebrate their special day without thanking them for all the good things
they've done, for bringing up a nice family which we will always be a part of.
Pa, thank you and Happy Father's Day!
