It’s the time of the year again when love is in the air. Pinoys are a highly romantic and emotional bunch. And having the most western influence among Asians, most Pinoys celebrate Valentines in one way or the other. Despite financial and other third world challenges, Pinoys will surely come up with resourceful ways to stage another romantic Valentine’s Day this year.
To satisfy my curiosity, I went around and asked a few friends and strangers what they plan on doing this Valentine’s Day:
“Simple lang, I’ll ask her to be with me tapos attend kami sa Lovapalooza . Then kain lang, inom at kwentuhan tungkol sa mga nakakatawang bagay.” (Just simple, I’ll ask her to be with me, then we’ll go to Lovapalooza. After that, we’ll just eat out, drink a bit and chat about funny stuff.)”
Roden, 25, race track announcer
“Dinner by the beach is still the best, with everything that will bring good vibes --- seafood, coconut juice, candles, sunset, etc.”
Christine, 26, office worker
“Bibigyan ko lang ng chocolates ‘yung asawa ko tapos kakain kami sa labas.” (I’ll just give my wife some chocolates and then we’ll eat at a restaurant.)
Ryan, 30, office worker
“Kung ano lang ang kasya sa allowance. Siguro manonood ng Gerald-Kim movie, kain nang konti then uuwi nang maaga kasi may curfew ang girlfriend ko at may pasok pa rin kami kinabukasan.” (We’ll just have something we can afford. Maybe we’ll watch a Gerald-Kim** movie, grab a bite then go home early as my girlfriend has a curfew at home and we also have classes the next day.)
Christian, 16, high school student

“My husband said we will probably drive to Tagaytay with my whole family for that weekend. Picnic and horse-back riding will be best for us I think.”
Melissa, 35, housewife
“I already set up a nice dinner at a restaurant by a sea. I intend to propose to my girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.”

Wilson, 28, engineer
“My boyfriend is a videoke addict so we’ll probably end up going to a videoke bar… or a comedy bar will not be a bad idea at all. It doesn’t really matter where, for as long as we’re together.”
Kelly, 23, call center agent
“Magsisimba kami ng asawa ko kasama ang mga apo namin, magpapasalamat para sa lahat ng Valentine’s Days na magkasama kami.” (My husband and I will go to church with our grandchildren to thank God for all the Valentine’s Days we are together.)
Anita, 57, food stall owner
“Sa bahay lang kami, manonood siguro ng DVD at magluluto ng espesyal na putahe --- at least hindi kami gagastos nang malaki.” (We will just stay at home, watch DVD and cook something special, at least we won’t have to spend a lot of money.)
Dave, 37, security guard
* Lovapalooza is an annual Valentine’s Day event sponsored by a toothpaste manufacturing company. Couples from different parts of the Philippines gather together for the biggest kissfest in the country. This also serves as a bid to Guinness Book of World Record for the Most Number of Simultaneously Kissing Couples.
** Filipino on-screen couple, Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu, will be releasing a movie titled “Paano Na Kaya” by the end of January.
